Barcelona although not itself a resort feels like one and has everything you are looking for. We went this past summer and delighted in the place.

we regularly go to fuengirola on the costa del sol…we have a lovely apartment there and its only 15 mins drive from malaga airport…lovely beach…plenty of delicious and cheap restaurants and nightlife!

I would recommend Barcelona - I have holidayed there twice (last time being October 2007) and it is a great city - (just watch your pockets and purse/bag etc). There is much to see and do in Barcelona - and the Gaudi architecture is out of this world. Streets are wide, open and full of life.
There is a small beach and there are bars and clubs. a harbour and great atmosphere..
You could also take the train from Barcelona down to Sitges - the trains run frequently and it takes only about 25-35 minutes. Sitges is a seaside town with a long beach, warm Mediterranean water and all the other things you mention above.
This way you can have the best of both worlds.

Nerja on the Costa Del Sol is a lovely town by the sea. Nerja still retains the feel of an old Spanish town. It has very safe cove like beaches. It isn’t overrun by roudy tourists. It has some great bars and lovely restaurants. Nerjs is about 45 kilometres east of Málaga. About an hour´s driving from the airport. I love Nerja. I live not far away and often go there for lunch.
